The City

you would never be ready
to settle in the city
building a home would be burying your legs in the ground
eventually we’d see this isn’t what we needed
this crude display was just a stop along the way

if i could I would explain
how it could be that we were left freezing in the rain
for well over a decade
the flesh was raw, it had not thawed yet
the heat the sweat was shocking don’t you know

in our haste to be chaste we would miss out on eachother
we would go our separate ways, each move on to another
you were so consumed with what God might be thinking of you
that you were silent

i wanted something more than monotone complacence
you wanted something that resembled decoration
i’d heard these stories of looking into windows
the shades were drawn, the lights were off
you were long gone
