I am strong because I can speak,
I can say no,
And yes,
And be heard above the noise.
I am strong because I can stop,
Intolerance and injustice,
Worrying,
just to feel the spin of the earth,
And appreciate the beauty of the world.
I am strong because I can feel,
The wind caress my skin,
The sun illuminate the waves of my hair,
And the splendor of the moment.
I am strong because I can express,
My incandescent joy through laughter,
My inestimable pain through tears,
And my love through a smile.
I am strong because I have a heart,
That has been held by many,
Treasured by few,
And touched like none other.
I am strong because I can dream,
Of a career and a family,
Of men either passing through or maybe dwelling,
And of far off places and sacred spaces where I am free.
I am strong because I can give,
My help to all,
My trust to few,
And my love to a man whom I choose.
I am strong because I care,
About the little things,
Deeply for those close to me,
And for myself.
I am strong because I am a woman,
Who owns her gender,
Who carries herself proudly,
And who refuses to be taken for granted.
I am strong because I am worthy,
Of pride from my parents,
Of respect from my peers,
And of love from all whom I encounter.
I am strong because I have the courage,
To carve my own path,
To pick up the pieces,
And to be an individual.
I am strong because I am original,
With a beauty that is all my own,
With an identity that cannot be duplicated,
And with a face that will not be forgotten.
I am strong because I am me,
Caitlin Marie Ferrell.
